How to test an AI front desk before your customers call

A simple test plan using your own real calls, so you find the problems before your customers do.

A smooth demo tells you little. What matters is how it handles your calls, on a bad day. This guide gives you a plan you can run in an afternoon.

Why test with your own calls

Every business has its own awkward questions, accents, abbreviations and special cases. A supplier cannot guess them. In a 2026 survey by Simply Business, 36 per cent of small business owners named accuracy as a barrier to using AI. Testing is how you replace that worry with evidence.

The test plan

  1. Write down ten real calls you get. Use the exact words customers use.

  2. Add five awkward ones: a question you cannot answer, an angry caller, a vague request, a caller who changes their mind, a call about something you do not do.

  3. Ask people with different accents and speaking styles to try them, and test with a little background noise.

  4. Try to trip it up. Ask for something it should refuse, or ask the same thing in a different way.

  5. Test the hand-over. Ask for a person, and check the person receives what was said so far.

  6. Read the transcripts. Look for answers that are wrong, vague or too long.

  7. Fix what you find, then run the whole plan again.

What a good result looks like

  • It answers what it knows, plainly and correctly.

  • It says it does not know, and takes a message or hands over, instead of guessing.

  • It never makes up a price, a policy or a promise.

  • It hands over smoothly, with the details already passed on.

Set a pass mark first. Decide before you start what counts as ready, for example: no wrong answers on the ten real calls, and every awkward call handled safely. Then you are judging evidence, not a feeling.

How this works with us

You describe how your front desk should behave, then test it before any customer calls, on supported plans. Every conversation is logged with a transcript, so you can review what was said at any time, before and after you go live.

Keep reviewing after go-live. A short weekly look at the transcripts catches small problems early.
